Just wanted to note the new year and say, yes, it is indeed 2013. I didn’t feel moved to make any resolutions this time round. I figure I’ll be busy enough with Growstuff and if I can do a good job of that, that’s achievement enough.

A number of my friends have made or renewed resolutions to read more books by people of colour. I was at the public library yesterday and found myself looking at the shelves with that in mind. I wasn’t looking for anything in particular, so I just started on the nearest shelves, which happened to cover the history of the Middle East, Asia, and Africa. Very few authors’ names struck me as being other than Anglo. Sigh. I did find two books about Egypt though, and a couple of books on Australian Aboriginal history in the next row. I’m glad that other people’s resolutions made me more mindful of this.

What are your resolutions this year? Or have you punted like me?

My resolution is to watch more stuff on my Netflix queue. Which has, now that I think about it, a bunch of stuff made by non-white creators on it, though to be honest a lot of that is my deep abiding affection for SE Asian historical and martial arts movies. (I also do that thing where I get in discussions about white privilege in mainstream entertainment and then go throw a bunch of stuff mentioned by people in comments onto my queue, so sometimes I wake up and stare at it in a puzzled manner wondering where I heard of all these things...)

I used to have exactly the same Netflix problem! Sometimes they would turn out awesome, and sometimes I'd just fine myself going "wtf?"

Two that were recced to me that way that I ended up loving: "Trick" (gay dating dramedy), and "Stick It" (rebel gymnasts).

I already have over 200 things on my queue, I need to watch some before I add more! (Hence the, um, resolution.)

The only thing I have done for the New Year is made sure my physical life was in some kind of order (laundry, cleaning) to start 'fresh' as it were, and to make a list of things that I am currently worrying about, so I can continue to worry about them.

I like the idea of a clean start. I didn't do it though! Maybe I'll think of that next year. It would be a good way to spend my anti-social NYE.

I don't make resolutions anymore.

I did, however, hang up a sign I got for Christmas that asks "What good shall I do this day?" (http://www.bestmadeco.com/products/what-good-enamel-steel-sign)

Yay Ben Franklin :) I was recently looking at his list of virtues which someone linked in discussing NY resolutions. I much prefer this list I found yesterday: http://www.brainpickings.org/index.php/2013/01/01/four-famous-new-years-resolution-lists-jonathan-swift-susan-sontag-marilyn-monroe-woody-guthrie/ The best one: Woody Guthrie's "Wash teeth (if any)".
